From the Toronto Star; Thomas King has won the Governor General's Award for his novel "The Back of the Turtle" AND a translation of his non-fiction work "The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America", also won.

This is a big deal in Canada, and very prestigious.

Mr. King was born in California; his father was Cherokee and his mother white. He has been an author and activist for First Nations rights for many years, and is currently a professor of English at Guelph University in Ontario. (Hey; I have a cousin who may have studied with him!)
