Welcome To The Bitchery

For all of you French onion soup connoisseurs...

I need advice! I want to make French onion soup but never have done so before. I looked up a few recipes, and I've seen some that use red wine and some that use white wine. I really have no intention of going out and buying wine just for this, but I do have some Chardonnay in the fridge as well as some Cabernet Sauvignon. Which one would work better? Thank you!
