Former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in federal prison for taking $1 million in bribes from the builder of a pair of juvenile detention centers in a case that became known as "kids-for-cash."
4,000 kids. This piece of shit unfairly violated the constitutional rights of 4,000 kids and basically sold their freedom in exchange for cash kickbacks from privately owned juvenile detention centers. Children as young as 10 years old were sent to lockup, many of them first-time offenders convicted of petty theft and other minor crimes.
Ciavarella says he was found guilty only of accepting nearly $1 million from Mericle [the detention company], which he considered a legitimate finder's fee for introducing Mericle to the detention-center project, and filing false tax returns.
