ZOMFG you guys. It's back! It's back it's back it's back! Game of Thrones is back! And what a fun reemergence it was. Sunday's episode (in a totally not annoying, non-overtly expository way) got us all caught up with what's been going on throughout Westeros and Essos. But perhaps most excitingly of all, it introduced us to one of the most badass houses in the entire series (and one I have wanted to tackle in Game of Threads since the very beginning): the Martells.
The seat of House Martell, Sunspear, lies in Dorne, the southernmost of the seven kingdoms, and the most unusual. Dorne is the one kingdom Aegon Targaryen the Conqueror and his dragons were unable to overthrow in his unification of the continent. It was many years before Dorne came under the auspices of Targaryen rule, and only then through mutual agreement and marriage.
Relevant to the interests of most of you readers, the Dornish also have this super-awesome tradition of nurturing badass women and female rulers. Nymeria, hardcore warrior queen (and Arya's direwolf's namesake), conquered Dorne with the help of House Martell, giving the kingdom an ethnically and culturally unique flavor from the rest of Westeros (Rhoynish, if you're interested). Nymeria's legacy is perhaps why the Dornish allow either men or women to inherit titles and lands—gender doesn't matter, only birth order.
At this point in the story, Dorne is ruled by Prince Doran, who is quietly awesome. But it's his brother, Oberyn (along with his mistress, Ellaria Sand) who is currently ruling our collective fangirl heart. Hedonistic, sexy, shrewd, passionate, and calculating, "The Red Viper" brings a lot to the table. Season 4 of GoT promises to be amazing, and it is due in no small part to the badassery of Oberyn. So how should we dress to curry the favor of this power couple...?
Let's start with a flowy maxi dress...
Because first of all, it's hot in Dorne, so you really don't want anything too heavy. Moreover, the Martells are not a house to shy away from a plunging neckline. (Also, for some reason, I often picture them in purple... I'm pretty sure this is just a me thing...)
Follow this simple but fairly awesome dress with simple but fairly awesome sandals...
Again, it's hot down there. Not only hot but desert-y. (In fact, as evidenced by Ellaria, all bastards in Dorne are given the surname "Sand" because there is so damn much of the stuff. Sandals, therefore, feel appropriate, but let's put some gold on there because we're not peasants.)
Now for the accessories. The Martells are known for their propensity to use poison, so let's throw in a vintage poisoner's ring...
And finally, the sigil of House Martell is a sun pierced by a spear, so let's reference with a necklace and some earrings...
Et voila. Even your archenemies the Lannisters will be jealous of this look.
