Gardening/Houseplant check in

How are everyone’s houseplants and gardens doing this summer?

As anathema as this is to say for a St. Louis resident, I’ve been struggling with the lack of rain. Combined with the heat, I have been babying my veggies a lot. The yard - eh, it might go dormant, but it will be fine. The flowers - eh, they are all well-established and nothing’s been wilting so not worried about them. My veggies on the other hand, you bet your ass I’m going to keep those from drying out.

I got my first big tomato this week!!! I’ve always wanted to grow big tomatoes (and by big, I mean not cherry tomatoes, I don’t even mean those biguns like beefsteaks, big boys, brandywines, ets) but in the old condo everything was in pots and last summer I was so new in the house that I didn’t know yet what sort of summer light I had, etc.

Anyhoo, I picked an Early Girl tomato earlier this week and it’s about the size of a baseball and I am ecstatic! I haven’t sliced into it yet since I had some others from the store which I needed to finish off first. I’ve got 2 more which should ripen this week, and a fuckton of green tomatoes going to town on that plant. I’m so excited!

I also picked a few banana peppers this week and they are delicious! More are ripening this week and I think I’ll have a ripe jalapeno, so that’s also got me stoked.

In sad news, one of my houseplants is not doing well. I caused the problem by letting it go way too long without water, and I don’t know if it can recover. Brown spots on several of the leaves now. There’s no dampness on the leaves, so I don’t think there is a fungus, I think the poor thing is just dealing with dehydration.
