Canadian actor Jonathan Crombie, best know for his role as Gilbert Blythe in Anne of Green Gables and other related Sullivan Films projects has passed away at the age of 48 as the result of a brain hemorrhage.

His sister Carrie Crombie says he was a fitness enthusiast, and that as a result they were able to donate his organs, something her brother would have been proud of.

Apparently he was living in New York at the time of his death, and the family intends to bring him home to Toronto one last time, the same way he always travelled between the two cities: by bus. Crombie apparently refused to fly, so the family will travel to New York and bring his ashes back on the bus.

When I was growing up, the Anne of Green Gables miniseries was huge. It’s a strange thing to see people who were young actors in your childhood pass on. He was 17 and appearing in a high school play when cast in the role of Gilbert, over other actors like Jason Priestly.
