I am going to find this year in the land of abstract concepts and murder it. Andrew Sachs has died at the age of 86.
Maybe you don’t know Sachs’ name; he never became a famous comedian, but he was always a strong, terrific, and often hilarious presence in the many radio, television, and audiobook projects he took on. In Fawlty Towers, he was the light in a grimy English hotel as the waiter from Barcelona, Manuel; to Doctor Who fans, he’s the voice of Skagra from Shada. He appeared in the stately Quartet, and he’s read in all sorts of things ranging from Terry Pratchett to Sherlock Holmes to several audiobooks my mom loves (his rendition of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is superb).
This isn’t the proper way to phrase things in an obituary, but I am fucking pissed he is dead. He was a great actor, and we have lost him. I hope he, Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder, David Bowie, and all the rest of them are having one hell of a party in the afterlife.
