Welp they certainly are favoring dudes this year for basically everything. Like I realize that’s business as usual, but some years they at least acknowledge talent outside of the “white dude” demographic.
Completely fucking snubbed Watchmen, which is amazing given the acting, writing, and production quality of that show.
Apple TV’s “The Morning Show” got nominated for best drama series. Anybody watched that one? I have no apple devices so no apple tv.
Not a single broadcast network series got nominated, so that’s interesting. I don’t know how common that is, but it does make you wonder if the presentation medium (sans commercials, abilities to use whatever language you want, etc) stack the deck in favor of non-broadcast network shows.
No women directors nominated for for best film, despite Little Women and Portrait of a Woman on Fire which are very well-acclaimed. The Mr. Roger’s movie was directed by a woman, too. No women screenwriters nominated either.
Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us” was snubbed, too, which is bullshit.
To quote the LA Times,
“But then according to the HFPA, all the very best films are about men. “Rocketman,” Once Upon a Time.. in Hollywood,” “1917,” “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “The Two Popes,” even “Jojo Rabbit,” revolve almost exclusively around male characters.”
Alright, enough enough of my rant. Off to take more Dayquil and a nap.
ETA apparently the HFPA is like 90 reporters.
90 people who get to vote on winners.
UMM why is this even an awards show we televise? 90 people deciding doesn’t mean shit.
