So I've been considering getting a dog as a way to help me through my current period of unemployment/crippling depression—it would require me to get out of the house at least twice a day and help me to meet other pet lovers, and also, as much as I love my two cats, dogs are companion animals in a way even the friendliest, most sociable of cats are not.
However, I know very little about dogs and have no idea what I should be looking for. My apartment doesn't allow animals that weigh more than 35 lbs., so I need a small breed (also, I live in a smallish two-bedroom without a yard, and I don't think that would be fair to a big dog), and I need one that will get along with my cats. I definitely want to go with an animal from a rescue or shelter, as well, and I'm thinking an older dog would be a better bet than a puppy, though I'm flexible on that score.
Can any of you dog people help me out with suggestions here? Obviously I'm going to lay all this out to the rescue/shelter volunteers, but I think having an idea of what I'm looking for would be really helpful, and there are so many types of dogs and so much information that trying to Google has just left me incredibly overwhelmed.
