And by that I mean “not terrible” news.
- Turns out the border wall, when it spans a river (like the Rio Grande), is violating a 48 year old treaty with Mexico. The treaty says neither side can obstruct the waterway unless both sides agree. The big issue at hand is areas of Mexico being subject to increased flooding. If things progress, there is a chance it would end up in international court which would probably mean the treaty is to be honored. (None of that is to say that 45 wouldn’t just do what he wants and risk trade war or real war or something).
- Trump is walking back his demands that the border wall is funded to avoid a government shut down. So, not today, Satan, I guess.
- (OK I’m going to call this one “good” hoping that it goes through). There is a bill going before the Louisiana legislature with significant bi-partisan support that would ban the death penalty in Louisiana. Two Republicans and one Democrat are behind it. They cite the fact that it is not a financially wise decision, and Catholicism, as the reasoning for this. They are also admitting that states without the death penalty have lower homicide rates. I almost spit out my coffee with surprise hearing this one on the radio.
