Regarding the Jez article about Grey's Anatomy, One commenter thinks that Mer marrying Derek "cancels the whole thing" of the one night stand out. Then she goes on to demonize her and canonize Christina. WTF? Wrong on SO MANY LEVELS and also not accurate.
What kind of POINT is the one-night stand supposed to make? Independent woman? She's a resident so I think that's already covered. Sexually liberated? Sure but how exactly does getting married to the one night stand eliminate it?
Yes, you can dislike or hate Meredith for her choices or personality (or Shonda and the writers for crafting them that way). But seeing Cristina (or Shonda's creation of her) as the groundbreaking glorious unconventional strong female character and Meredith as whiny, crazy and insecure doesn't make any kind of good point.
One group of women's perfect role model is another group's batshit weirdo, so could we please stop christening women good or bad role models as if there is any one such thing?
This is EXACTLY my thought with the criticism of Meredith's character (I'm talking in a theory way not in the "she annoys me" way). Is she a bad progressive female character because she was "dark and twisty" for a lot of the show? NO! Does the fact that the show framed Cristina and Owen's courting relationship like a classic British drama take anything away from her character's groundbreaking choices? NO!
What the show says is what I've thought feminism (or perhaps early feminism. I don't know a lot about it) is all about. We are (or should be) free to do whatever we want. We can get married and have children (and a career!). We can also choose not to! Or do a mixture of both! Or none! Whatever! We're not supposed to NOT ever be "crazy" or feel out of control because it would bend to the stereotype of women as "crazy." We're just not defined by it.
Seeing that women can be all kinds of things, and that they don't have to be trapped by one image, one act, one note, is freeing.
THIS IS WHY SHONDA RHIMES IS AWESOME AND GREY'S ANATOMY IS AWESOME. For whatever different choices they make, Meredith and Cristina are each other's person. They're more similar than different. One is not wrong, while the other is right. One would not exist on this show without the other (until next season when Sandra Oh's contract ends).
I should prob edit this to make it more coherent but I'm kinda fired up and want to make a drink.
