Sorry for the tardiness. My weekend turned out WAY busier than anticipated.

This was a delightful read! It reminded me a lot of the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger, down to the parasol.

I had a few problems with it when I started. I figured it was just another novel where the lead was a strong, opinionated, not conventionally attractive women who would be married by the end of the book because no one is safe from love. I did enjoy the quips and romantic tension between Peabody and Emerson, but I was disappointed when they were basically married by the end of the book. I’d like to have seen more interactions between them in book 2 before marriage. I actually rather hoped Evelyn and Amelia might be romantically connected in some way. There were times in the book they both said they could grow old together, etc. Thoughts?

Oh yes, and all the “ignorant native” talk was super problematic. Much ethnocentrism, very worthy of discussion.

Other than those stereotypes, I really did like the book. It was a fun, but easy to figure out mystery. Anyone else innately know who the mummy was?

What did you think of Amelia? Too strong for you taste? Admirable? A good contrast to Evelyn? or Emerson?

And whatever else related to this book you want to talk about? I think I might casually continue the series!
