Novel by Vernor Vinge. Hard sci-fi. I'm about 200 pages from the end and I love it very much, even as I know I've missed some things (it's taken me about three months to read it). Even when I've struggled to read in general (one of the symptoms of my depression), Deepness has never really gotten boring. It's not an easy read, per se, but it's a fascinating one. I'd love to discuss it once I'm done (pls not to spoil right now!) but I'd also like to know if anyone else has adored it.
