I call upon the Groupthink hivemind for help!

For those of you who don’t know/don’t remember, I work at an English academy in Korea. The school I work at has a once-a-week class where students have to read a book for homework and do some worksheets about it in class. I’m in charge of making content for this particular class, which for the most part isn’t too difficult. Most of their other classes have a lot (a LOT) of writing, so I’ve been doing my best to keep these worksheets as fun as possible. For example, there’s a lot of “Describe how you would react in this situation. Now draw a picture!” The kids enjoy it, and usually it isn’t too hard to come up with things for them to do.

The problem is, the highest level for this particular class has to read a book about slavery (“The Story of Slavery” by Sarah Courtald*). Linguistically the kids are considered the same as American fifth graders, but in reality they’re only third and fourth graders. These are Korean kids who don’t really have any concept of slavery—it did exist historically here, but I think it’s very much glossed over in school, and they definitely did not have the institutionalized racism that American did. It’s hard for them to wrap their minds around, and I want to help them do that in a way that is not blatantly offensive or inappropriate. My boss suggested “Imagine you’re a slave!” but I don’t want to go that route for obvious reasons.

So, I need help creating appropriate content for this particular book/subject. I have one reading comprehension worksheet, but I need another that’s slightly more interesting and will hopefully get the kids thinking. (Not necessarily fun, for obvious reasons, but not boring and not a ton of writing if I can avoid it.)

*I can’t change this book because my boss decided she wants it and already ordered the whole lot. I wish she’d asked me about it first...
