I guess a TW belongs in here for child abandonment, rape, and general assholery.

This morning I came across a story someone posted on the Facebooks about Arkansas rep. Justin Harris "rehoming" a couple of girls he and his wife adopted, then gave to someone else, who ended up raping one of the girls. Of course one of his cronies thinks this isn't a problem at all, and HOW DARE anyone attack his gawd-fearin' cohort.

The timing of this story is interesting to me personally based on several factors: I'm adopted myself, which isn't a bad thing and my parents are awesome and didn't rehome my ass. I'd been following someone else on Facebook who bemoans the state of the foster care system in the US, walks the walk in that he's a foster parent right now (for a toddler who is lily white, but the kid has a stable homelife right now), is rabidly pro-life and Republican, is also adopted, has posted that parents should have their rights terminated immediately if their infants are born with drugs in their system, and thinks privatizing the entire process will be just fucking awesome for those kids (read, giving the kids to "good, Christian families", because of course no one else parents as well as them!).

This is a ball of wax for obvious reasons. This guy and his small government friends want drug testing for every infant now? And then terminate parental rights immediately if drug results are found? And then take the kids and put them in foster care until they're adopted? Yet the current foster care system is horribly broken, and privatizing it won't fix the kids who are already considered "too old" to adopt. Oh, and let's add in the average GOP stance of "small government" what with slashing programs such as CPS and foster care, and that having access to contraception to prevent some of these problems to begin with somehow goes against Jeebus and "personal responsibility". And last but definitely not least...how about the girl in the story who was let down in the worst ways by Rep. Harris? No one's talking about her, and wasn't this supposed to be allll about what's best for the children?!

I guess this is yet another example of the hypocrisy of the GOP saying they care about kids, yet doing the exact opposite. I'm not a fan of the current system for foster care, but I'm also not a fan of thinking that religious charities should get back into the business of child trafficking for the convenience of the adults, with little to no thought for the kids involved, and then invoke Jeebus as an excuse when things go wrong, whether intended or not. And yes, I know that is happening now, but I don't want to see that type of thing continue to grow as women are forced in many parts of the US to carry unwanted pregnancies to term thanks to knuckle-dragging morons who think every woman wants to get knocked up because BOOTSTRAPS.

Sorry if this not incredibly well thought-out and rambly, but I really just wanted to throw the links out there to Rep. Harris' overwhelming hypocrisy and idiocy more than anything else. The rest is just feeeeelings.
