So about a week ago, I noticed I had a sore in my cheek. Felt like I had bitten it in my sleep, and then it got a little infected somehow. Didn’t think much of it, and then the gland on the same side of my face blew up. That was weird, but I used some Amosan oral rinse, and my cheek got better. Gland went down within a day.
Then my gum got infected. I didn’t think much of it. I just used some more Amosan, and it too, seemed on the mend. Then I had a dentist appointment on Sat. I had wanted my gum to heal up before so I didn’t get a lecture, but things didn’t go my way.
So I go in, and the dentist asks how I have been. I tell my story, and he says he will have a look. He looks then says to me “Have you been running a fever?”
Me: “Not that I am aware of.”
Dentist: “What have you been taking for the pain?”
Me: Um, nothing. It only hurts when I brush my teeth.
He just stared at me for a moment and then he said “Have you had this before?”
I responded “ I guess. I get sore gums now and then.”
Him “But never this bad?”
Me: Well, it does seem extra tender when I brush...
Him: Well, I am going to apply some freezing and then we will clean it up.”
So he applies some freezing and then tells me I have an abcess he needs to drain, and after that, he will be giving me antibiotics.
So he does his thing. Then when he is finished, he says “I thought you might need antibiotics, but it looks pretty good now. Just rinse it with warm salt water and massage your gums. Unless you want antibiotics?
I’m a good girl who knows the unnecessary prescription of antibiotics is contributing to antibiotic resistance. Also I am a bit oblivious and it took a while to register how concerned he was initially, so I told him that if he didn’t think I needed antibiotics I wouldn’t take them.
Him: Well if you have any pain, take some Advil.
Me (Thinking) Pain, what pain?
This morning right at 9 am I got a call from his receptionist, checking in to see if I was doing ok. I could brush my teeth without pain this morning and the swelling is way down so I believe I am on the mend.
It must have looked way worse than it felt.
So now my cleaning is rescheduled to next Saturday.
