At risk of setting off a battle that would make cake vs pie or beans vs no beans in chili, I'm here to ask, how do you like your bbq sauce? And if you have a favorite brand or home recipe, please share!

I made homemade bbq sauce last night, it was delicious. Mine is a hybrid of tomato and vinegar based. I like the thickness of a tomato base, but love the bite of the vinegar. I think it mighttechnically be considered a "Memphis style" sauce. Mine ends up being more thinner than a traditional tomato based one, but it does have tomato in it.

My sauce was:

  • 1 cup cider vinegar
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ~1 cup ketchup
  • ½ diced and sautéed red onion
  • 1 scant tsp white sugar
  • 1 heaping tsp brown sugar (I would have used molasses if I could have found my bottle of it)
  • Dash of ghost chili powder
  • salt to taste

I mixed this all together in a small sauce pan and simmered about 30 minutes until it was reduced to the thickness I wanted. It tasted like magic on shredded chicken on a homemade bun with some bread and butter pickles.

I've always wanted to try a mustard based sauce, but the weirdness keeps me from making it on my own when I know what I already make is so good.

(We won't even get into a bbq debate, since all I did was cook the chicken in my crockpot and the shred it, and I know that is far from bbq. But that is a whole discussion/cult/religion in itself)
