Humans of New York is doing a fundraiser for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, in honor of Dr. Richard O’Reilly. Two-Thirds of the money will go towards cancer research, and One-Third of the money will go towards psychologically and socially supporting the patients and their families. This includes non-medical services such as therapy and subsidies for travel.
According to the charity site:
Funding is scarce for pediatric cancer. Because cancer most often occurs in older populations, pharmaceutical companies are not incentivized to develop treatments for cancers that develop during childhood. Therefore, nearly all funding for the research of pediatric cancer comes from private donations.
