Welcome To The Bitchery

Caity Weaver posted a Thatz Not Okay on cost splitting when it comes to gift giving, and I seriously cannot stop reading it. The entire debate in the comments (and in her response to the LW) are pretty biased towards the married sister, and it really examines the double income vs single income debate. This is the classic couplets vs singlets debate that rears its ugly head every couple of months. Of course, people are being assholes about it and bringing in semantics such as, "Well your kid didn't contribute anything so your kid shouldn't have their name on the card either."

Combining incomes and considering two incomes one unit seems sketchy to me. The math still plays in my head as one person making half as much and being expected to pay more. But what do I know, I don't even do Christmas. My brother once tried to get my sister and me to go in on a $300 necklace for my mom, who I have a tenuous relationship with at best. This was a week after my 13 year old car died and I had to buy a new one. I'm pretty sure I moved his emails into a special folder after that.

Do you handle cost splitting or do you avoid it at all costs? The concept of it seems lost on me.
