Wil Wheaton just posted a quote on tumblr from David Grohl that really resonates with me.
I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you fucking like something, like it. That’s what’s wrong with our generation: that residual punk rock guilt, like, “You’re not supposed to like that. That’s not fucking cool.” Don’t fucking think it’s not cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” It is cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic”! Why the fuck not? Fuck you! That’s who I am, goddamn it! That whole guilty pleasure thing is full of fucking shit.
Sometime in college, I got really sick of telling people that I liked something "ironically", or that a song was only on my ipod because I'd downloaded it for my niece, or qualifying my likes with "I know it's super-lame but..."
Why do we do that to ourselves? Not everything we like has to be a masterpiece. It's okay to like fluff, it's okay to like mindless entertainment. Other people obviously feel the same way, or else people wouldn't write pop songs, and reality TV wouldn't exist. I think people are becoming more open about liking, say, the new One Direction song, or watching My Strange Addiction, but they still refer to those things as guilty pleasures.
But why? Why feel guilty about liking something that a ton of other people also like, but are collectively all denying. Own it. Save your guilt for something that actually hurts other people. And next time someone mentions that their little sister is sad that Wizards of Waverly Place is over, don't feel guilty about saying "oh yeah! I loved that show!"
