I just got back from my monthly massage therapy appointment, and I feel Uh. Maz. Ing.
My right piriformis and related areas (gluteus medius, etc.—basically my butt cheek and hip) has been the bane of my existence for a long time now. Lots of tightness and cramping and stuff, and she's been working on it for ages. It's definitely improved over time, but today she said, "I think it's ready for a big move. Can I go for it?" I said sure, and I have no idea what she was doing, but it was the strangest, most painful and pleasant sensation I have ever experienced. She put a ton of pressure into the area and I could feel the muscles sliding around and it hurt so good, I was audibly moaning and groaning while it happened. It was bizarre because all these emotions came through while it was happening, too—not too surprising for anyone who's done yoga or other bodywork because we store emotions in our bodies in many ways, but still strange to experience every time it happens. I was laughing and almost crying, and when it was done I felt this huge surge of pleasure. It was probably neurotransmitters/endorphins, but it was amazing. My whole body got that postorgasmic relaxed sensation and I felt lightheaded (probably because of how I'd had to breathe to deal with the pain) and high. That was around 80 minutes ago and I'm still in some kind of hazy altered state of consciousness. A really, really nice one.
All of this is just to say, damn, my massage therapist is AMAZING. And damn I feel good. Anyone had this sort of thing happen before? I feel like it moved things not only physically, but psychologically. Like I just got done with a good cry or a productive therapy session. So weird.
