There’s a song that is getting a lot of Airplay on the CBC right now, probably because the band is headlining the Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa. I HATE IT. It’s called “Why you gotta me so rude? (Marry that Girl) and it is about a guy who asks his girlfriend’s Dad for his permission to marry his daughter, only the Dad says no.
Inthe beginning of the song the guy asks:
Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
Say yes, say yes ‘cause I need to know
You say I’ll never get your blessing ‘til the day I die
Tough luck, my friend, but the answer is ‘No’
Then the guy whines for a while about how her Dad is so rude, doesn’t he know guy is human too, before concluding that he is going to marry her anyways.
Beyond the whiny delivery, and the repetitiveness of the song, it grates on me that in 2015 we have bands releasing songs where two men discuss a woman’s future without us ever hearing what she wants. Surely in the midst of all the whining their could have been some time to at least mention that this is what the girl wants?
