This stuff with Paula Deen, as well as a comment I made about Lady Antebellum that got some interesting feedback has me thinking about one of my favorite videos by one of my favorite dudes, Jay Smooth. You've probably seen this before but this video has definitely reshaped how I talk about things involving racism. Focus on what they did not who they are. It's so easy for Paula Deen to say, "I'm not a racist" with example A, B, and C. But what she did was racist and she can't refute that. That's what we should be focusing on.

Also - true fact: I made an ass out of myself trying to talk (read: fangirling) to Jay Smooth at a Feministing event then years later saw him on the 1 train and ran away.
