The US has an abortion rate of 67 percent when it comes to fetus with Down Syndrome. Iceland virtually 100 percent.
In my mind and let’s face it my mind could be wrong there are three different issues here.
1. Women have the right to abortion no matter the reason. Clear cut yes.
2. Society. Should there be sociatel pressure even subtle to have abortions due to any particular reason. In this case you have a virtual 100 percent rate. In Icelandic society is there some pressure to abort Down Syndrome fetuses. That I am not sure where the line is to begin with.
In Icelandic culture if a Down Syndrome test returns a positive do women believe abortion is just the right choice or is there pressure that abortion is what society expects. I am not sure which part is true or a mixture.
3. Is there a belief in aborting a Down Syndrome fetus a societal good? This relates to second point. If you have essentially 100 percent abortions for fetus with Down Syndrome I have to wonder if this plays a part. Part of me wants to say if this is Icelandic belief even if its not codified in law who am I to judge that society. Women have complete say over their bodies yet is pressure even unwritten being applied.
Which goes back to the question is abortion of Down Syndrome fetus be even considered the good for society. The virtual 100 percent keeps gnawing it me. It is just so universal. I wonder why. I keep in my mind wondering if societal good is not a factor. Abortion is legal for deformed fetuses after 16 weeks. Down Syndrome is considered a deformed fetus. Should Down Syndrome be considered a deformity even?
I say no. A disability yes deformity no. We have all known children and adults with Down Syndrome they have a range of learning and physical disabilities. To use the word deformed to me dehumanizes them.
Yet women no matter the reason have the choice to abort I cannot help but wonder if using the term deformity and having pressure to have tests does not lead to pressure to have abortions for Down Syndrome.
To me deformity should only be used if the fetus won’t survive post infancy. The law needs to be abortion at any stage no matter the reason and not use deformity for Down Syndrome. This will end any societal pressure.
I clearly could wrong.
