The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance Passed! With a vote 11-6 the City Council finally, after postponing the vote by two weeks, voted to ban discrimination in the U.S.'s 4th largest city.

The ordinance bans discrimination on the basis of "sex, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, disability, pregnancy and genetic information, as well as family, marital or military status." All of which are already covered by Federal law. Of course the big issue was the ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity which as always brought out the bathroom scare meme.

Of course there have been no incidents of trans inclusive legislation leading to bathroom assaults by trans people. In fact the problem is the reverse, assaults on trans people in bathrooms. But why let that ruin a good scare story for conservatives and TERFs to use?

Of course being a masochist I waded into the comments on the breaking news update our local KHOU 11 facebook page had. Not really surprised but thought I should share. Warning for lots of transmisogyny, transphobia, and threats of violence.

Ah yes. I am glad that isn't a slur for us to be offended by. Thank you RuPaul.

Threats of violence by men towards trans women! Also keeping people out of women's restrooms by having a man

stand out front judging who meets his standard of "woman enough"? Sounds

great.

She has gay and trans friends! So totally not a bigot! Also this law destroys the invisible forcefield that kept predators out of bathrooms. Good job SG-1 LGBT people.

Diapers? Great plan.

What about straight rights?! Wait does this mean that cis hetero people aren't allowed to use public restrooms anymore? Not sure what right they are losing otherwise.

Trans people are inherently messed up!

Of course Houston is super tolerant! There is no discrimination! What other comments?
