*Spoilers for those who haven't read the books.*
So, I've read all of the books, and I watch the TV show religiously. I knew that the big showdown between Oberyn and the Mountain would be this season, and I just checked the show's Wikipedia page, and the eighth episode is titled "The Mountain and The Viper."
When I first heard that Oberyn was going to be in this season, I jumped for joy because he is one of my favorite ASOIAF characters, and I'm really into House Martell and Dorne. To be honest, I've been less than satisfied with his characterization in the TV show. He's been on screen so far for like all of 10 minutes and in 8.5 of those minutes he's boning someone. Okay, a big part of Oberyn is his sex appeal, but he's also an amazing fighter and a decent father to 8 daughters who aren't called the Sand Snakes for no reason. I feel like we haven't gotten a sense of his interests outside of fucking, and that disappoints me.
I know characters change between the books and the show, and there can only be so much screen time for every character, but it occurred to me today that with the way he's been portrayed so far, his death at the hands (literally) of the Mountain is going to be somewhat anti-climactic. His death in the books was really shocking to me even though I should have known better because it's ASOIAF, but his TV characterization hasn't really given me much reason to care about him other than he's Token Exotic Hottie. If I hadn't read the books, I probably wouldn't even give him much thought, but as I adore book Oberyn, his TV arc has been kind of a let-down.
