Moondance, Van Morrison, 1970
Sanvean (I am your shadow), Lisa Gerrard, 1995
Symphony No. 9, Ludwig van Beethoven, 1954
Weather Report (live performance) from Offenbach, 1975
I stood outside Paul’s Mall in Boston and caught one of the debut performances back in 1971. At the time, their approach and technique were more liberated, less predictable than dominant jazz groups. Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter had both played with Miles Davis and looked to set up an experimental group for greater individual/group explorations.
Lullaby Journey, Custer Larue, 2015
I love Custer Larue’s name, her voice, and her determination to keep alive the traditional American “folk” songs. Lullaby Journey is a collection of traditional American, Native American, and European lullabies. Some are so haunting and sweet it’s hard to believe they weren’t sung by lovers for each other. I suffer from insomnia. I find these songs reassuring and gentle when the night decides it’s not coming through this way on its own.
I am afraid tonight I will only have 5 of the 10 songs picked out for my imminent arrival on my own little water logged pied-a-terre. I’m afraid my brain refuses to do anymore tonight
