Welcome To The Bitchery

I was listening to one of my radio programs on Friday and there was a segment on soup. Melissa Clark (NY Times) was talking about potato and root vegetable soups and said she finds her immersion blender indispensable.

Do any of you have one you can recommend? Should I go for the lower price range or higher range? What kinds of things do you use it for?
