Y’all, I know we really really want to hope for it, but I am getting a little nervous about the conversations in my local liberal facebook groups (as well as in countless opinions articles) acting like it’s going to happen any day now. I’m worried there are starting to be too many eggs in that basket. The reality of it is that it’s not necessarily a given. It requires 2/3rds of representatives in both chambers of Congress to get Trump out of office. This requires 19 Republican Senators and over 90 House Republicans (exact number unclear until some vacant seats are filled).
I know what’s happening: we are all seeing that there is corruption even some Republicans are unhappy with. Maybe some will even investigate. They will wait until lots of facts come out. They will investigate some things but not others. And even if they find damning evidence, tell the public, and most of us believe it, there are still a TON of Republicans we need to break from party lines. There are still lots of voters who would punish them for impeaching the President. We are essentially banking on these people to have courage and integrity that they have proven to us they don’t. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could do a joint press conference confessing all their sins, and these Republicans would just find a way to support it instead.
I’m not saying don’t work toward impeachment or hope for it; I’m just saying we need to stop thinking of it as an any day now kind of situation. Things need to change for it to become inevitable, and one of the best ways we can try to force that change is moving Congress left - even if we don’t flip them, it’s a start. (oh, have I mentioned in the last 24 hours that we’ve got a competitive House seat up in Georgia?)
