In Which Chemistry is Frustrating

Riddle me this, Batman:

If polyatomic anions containing oxygen have names ending in -ate or -ite, why is OH^- called hydroxide? Or O2^2- called peroxide? WHY? Don't tell me a rule and then go break it!
