Does anyone have any good advice for dealing with insomnia/sleep disorders? Specifically, what are your thoughts on prescription sleeping medication?

I am a terrible sleeper. A “good” night for me is waking two or three times, but a typical night is waking every hour and tossing and turning like crazy. A bad night is simply lying awake all night while my boyfriend sleeps like a goddamn rock next to me, staring at the ceiling, slowly going insane. I have tried a lot of typical “sleep hygiene” strategies (including limiting screen time before bed) and nothing is working all that well. In fact, I think my sleeping issues are getting worse. I haven’t had a restful night’s sleep in as long as I can remember and I’m getting a little worried about how it might be affecting me (memory and mood issues, mostly).

I’m very hesitant to start taking prescription sleeping medication, in part because I understand it can be habit-forming. Both my mother and ex-boyfriend took trazodone for their sleeping issues and it seemed to have an overall negative effect on them. I remember my ex being a complete zombie in the morning every time he took it. Does anyone here have experience with sleeping medication and can give some advice as to whether it’s worth it? Obviously, I need to talk to my doctor but I’m just wondering what other people’s experiences have been.
