so, a barely over a year ago, right before mother’s day, my friend’s daughter died after falling from an unfenced cliff in Isla Vista. My friend was absolutely devastated - her bright, kind, wonderful UCSB student died so, so suddenly. She and her husband travelled immediately to Isla Vista and were surrounded by her daughter’s friends, and she came to love them like her own. then, while still drowning in grief and mourning, another tragedy struck the UCSB campus and she was terrified that among the dead and wounded would be her new “surrogate children”. All the people she knew there were not physically harmed, but it still made things so much harder on her - the shooting last year ripped a hole through the community that had embraced her in the aftermath of her child’s death. Now I see there has been another (probably road rage or crime related) shooting in Isla Vista, which I know is going to bring EVERYTHING back…I don’t think she has heard the news of the latest shooting yet, and I wish I could just slap a trigger warning on it and have her never know about it, but…ah life...
