For those that followed last night: well, they didn’t go for it. The ultimate decision-maker really wanted it to happen, but the deputy pointed out certain issues (I’m technically on probation, they’ve never done a year before that is only tangentially related to training) and there’s a chance I would lose my future position because the contract would only be good if I started within the next six months. It might have been possible to obtain definitive answers in the next two weeks, but not in two hours, and so a choice had to be made.

So, I declined. It was extremely hard and I will regret it for the rest of my life, but I know I would have regretted tanking my diplomatic career instead, so. It will always be the road not chosen, but some people at my work were really great and supportive about the whole thing (except for the head of my department, who I think hates me now. C’est la vie.)
