It's a sad moment for the British film industry, losing one of our greatest actors and directors. He won an Oscar for Best Director for his work on the film Gahdi.

He served in the Film Unit of the RAF during WW2, starring in films and filming the results of bombing raids.

Many remember him best in Jurassic Park and Miracle on 34th Street but my favourite of his films was Brighton Rock (the adaptation of the Graham Greene novel).
