Maintenance of Nice Boots/Leather?

Frye Boots—Treat yourself! My birthday present to myself—and the most I have ever spent on a single clothing item in my life—came in today. They are beautiful, and I love them, and I can't wait to wear them!

So does anybody have any particular advice on maintaining them literally forever? I already plan to take them to have a rubber sole put on. I already know how to clean leather and treat with leather cream/neetsfoot oil. But what about storage? Summers are hot, and I will not be wearing these camping or riding or for other outdoor activities. Should they be kept in some kind of plastic or paper wrapping or the box they came in for a few months when they're not being worn? I'm pretty sure just throwing them in the closet like I do my other shoes is not the best way to keep them nice.
