Editing to add this, it’s a key example of the sort of thing I mean, with regards to what seems like *outside people* (whether off-duty L.E.O.’s, or Racists/White Supremacists/Neo Nazis, or those “Anarchy!(TM)“ folks I mentioned (who seem to pop up at EVERY MSP-area protest, tbh).
This was the guy who seems to have started the trouble at the Auto Zone that was burned down.
He’s not the sort who was there to protest Mr. Floyd’s murder. It was a WARM, sunny day, and the legit folks there to protest were wearing t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, etc.
Going off that^ outfit, dude-bro here was out to start shit. (Frankly, much like the racist shithead who shot 5 people during the Jamar Clark rallies outside of the 4th precinct a few years ago.)
^^^This^^^ is the opportunism that’s been making me so angry & frustrated.
Because it’s assholes like this Douchebro who are trying to turn the legitimate protests about MPD murders, racism, & brutality, toward *their own* whims.
I’m sure by now, many of you have seen and/or heard about the murder of George Floyd, by (now former) members of the Minneapolis PD.
It WAS racism, plain & simple. There has been a bad, deep, and abiding cesspool of racism in the MPD for decades now.
Long enough, and deep enough, that our own Chief, Medaria Arradondo** was one of five black officers who sued the force over it years ago, back when he was a Lieutenant.
We have some really terrible cops, who have done some terrible things over the years.
And then we have some GOOD cops on our force, like Chief Arradondo, too.
Just like we have good people here, like George Floyd—who was a bouncer/security guy at Conga (the bar where one of my roommate’s PCA’s went regularly pre-COVID). My roommate’s Personal Care Attendant said Mr. Floyd was one of her favorite people over there. He was kind, and funny, and always made her smile.
And she’s obviously & reasonably heartbroken to have lost her friend to a senseless murder.
There were riots, and pice shooting teargas, marking rounds, and rubber bullets last night, after the peaceful protest earlier in the evening.
And then tonight there were riots.
They looted the Target down close to the store where Mr. Floyd was murdered, early on tonight.
Then it was the surrounding businesses in that part of town, and then the looting spread all across town.
The Target over across from our apartment building has been looted multiple times tonight.
All up & down Lake street, buildings have had their windows smashed, and been looted.
Including Magers & Quinn, the long-standing independent bookstore, and Penzey’s spices.
So far, the independent small restaurants closest to us are still secure... but I’m worried about them, because so many have already been on the edge because of COVID.
I understand exactly why people are mad, because I’m angry as FUCK that former officer Chauvin straight-up MURDERED Mr. Floyd.
If you’ve seen the video, you SAW Chauvin wiggling his hips & pressing his knee down tighter on Mr. Floyd’s neck.
It was murder, full stop.
And YES, there is a metric shit-TON to be protesting, about the MPD, and the Prison-Industrial-Complex.
But it’s ALSO 100% BULLSHIT, to loot businesses.
To burn down businesses, and ESPECIALLY to do that to all the small businesses around a murder-site, just for being there. When those businesses had NOTHING to do with Mr Floyd’s murder, and had more in common with the small business where Mr. Floyd used to work, where he is now VERY deeply mourned & missed.
Looting places like Target, burning down Auto Zone (and endangering the lives & health of all the firefighters responding to that hazardous burn, AND the health of all the locals *living* over there, who may already have pre-existing lung issues!), and breaking into & ruining all the other small (and, yes, some big business, too), ISN’T good.
My guess is, if Mr Floyd’s family is like Philando Castile’s, or Jamar Clark’s, the fact that this looting will end up unfortunately attached to the name of their beloved, will be DEEPLY hurtful.
It’s the LAST thing families want, and it’s deeply disrespectful to the memory of their murdered family member.
Protesting police brutality, corruptness, and ALL that?
Especially if it’s surrounding that precinct with protesters for wweks
In fact 100% GREAT!!!💗💓💖
But fucking up shit for all the little businesses in the area, where already hurting?
That’s a damn shitty thing to do.
Fwiw, It’s 2:45, and they’ve just come back for another round of looting, again.😕
