My father was the first in his family not born in Mexico or El Paso (it’s actually not super clear to me who was born where, they all speak about El Paso and Juarez like it was one big city back in the day.) I have a lot of family in El Paso still. This week has been a nightmare for them (and some already have trauma from violence in Juarez.)

When we were checking in after the massacre, some cousins sent me this recording of my grandpa talking about his life. He was 92 at the time and passed away two years later (he outlived my dad, his son, by ten months.)

This is how I found out that he and his family had been deported back to Mexico when he was young, but he came back to fight in WWII. I never knew that until last night.
