I’ve been reading Among the Janeites: A Journey Through the World of Jane Austen Fandom. I just read the chapter where one of the people of focus was Sandy Lerner. I knew it was a name I recognized, but I couldn’t place it at first. Then, as I went through the chapter, I realized it was in connection with Urban Decay make-up. After hearing her story in that book, and then doing some other research into her, she is definitely an amazing woman
that makes me feel like I’m just wasting my life.
She helped co-found Cisco, and then was fired for being too aggressive, bossy, and critical (aka take charge, and insistent on quality “leadership traits” in men). So, she started partnerships and charities with her money. She used some of that money to buy Chawton House (where Jane Austen had once lived, hence Lerner’s inclusion in the book), and spent millions restorting it and turning it into a library for the study of women’s writing, specifically The Centre for the Study of Early Women’s Writing, 1600-1830. She also wrote an very meticulously researched for historic accuracy sequel to Pride and Prejudice (the next book on my reading list, Second Impressions).
In the meantime, she founded Urban Decay, then sold it for millions. Now, she has a farm where she is trying, but sadly currently failing, at showing small scale organic farming can be sustainable and profitable. But, I love their goal, and the fact they are focusing on heritage breeds of animals that are raised and slaughtered humanely.
Basically, she is amazing, and I wish she had a biography out, because I want to read it and find out more about this amazing woman.
