This is going to be a weird one.

According to The Spokesman-Review, a Spokane, Washington local newspaper, the Spokane NAACP chapter president, Rachel Dolezal, has been falsely portraying herself as black.

The newspaper interviewed Dolezal’s mother Ruthanne Dolezal, who says Rachel is of Czech, German, and Swedish descent. Ruthanne says Rachel began to “disguise herself” around 2006-2007, after she and her African-American husband adopted four African-American children.

Rachel Dolezal’s motives are pretty unclear still, but it appears she centered much of her life around her false heritage. Dolezal is an adjunct professor of African American Culture at Eastern Washington University, and has served in other positions where she has represented herself as having African-American ancestry.

Then there are the numerous, dubious hate crimes that Rachel Dolezal has reported. One included a package being sent to a PO box owned by the NAACP chapter, but that the US postal service said was extremely unlikely to have been placed there by anyone who did not own a key to the box, as the package had not actually traveled through the US postal service system.

When contacted by The Spokesman-Review for comment, Rachel Dolezal provided:

“I feel like that question is not as easy as it seems,” she said. “There’s a lot of complexities … and I don’t know that everyone would understand that.”

Later, in an apparent reference to studies tracing the origins of human life to Africa, Dolezal added: “We’re all from the African continent.”
