The Henry Morgentaler clinic in Fredericton, NB is closing after 20 years of service. I am legitimately tears in my eyes and hole in my heart upset about this turn of events. The clinic has never been government funded and always appeared in the red. The only thing that kept it afloat for those decades was the charity of Dr. Henry Morgentaler, the namesake of the clinic, who passed away last year. This clinic provided abortions for women of the Maritimes at the cost of 700-850$.

This might seem like a lot. It is a lot. But due to outdated regulations the only alternative was one of the two hospitals in the entire province that provided"medically necessary abortions."
Pulled from the CBC article:

"Regulation 84-20 remains on the books and New Brunswick women will now have no option to access abortions in the province except by meeting its discriminatory and medically unjustifiable requirements," according to a statement issued by the clinic.

"Had the province provided funding for clinic abortions, or paid for abortions for women without ability to pay, the clinic would not be closing. To make matters worse, Regulation 84-20 makes it impossible for the majority of New Brunswick women to access an abortion in one of the two hospitals where the service is provided."

In order to obtain an abortion a woman (or girl) must provide documentation from two doctors that the abortion is medically necessary. New Brunswick, the province where many of my girlfriends were turned away by their family doctors when requesting birth control because the law allows them to decline any medical intervention that goes against their religious beliefs. These men and women, doctors who picket UNB, and the Morgentaler clinic with anti-choice signs and propaganda are potentially standing in the way of women's productive rights. (This happened. This actually happened!) This isn't just a hit for NB, this is a hit for PEI, and all the other small communities with women that would have commuted to Fredericton to the only privately owned, accessible clinic in their area.

I am fucking livid.

NB with it's depressed economy can't take many more hits. Our citizens can't all afford to travel to be approved for the procedure, and then to have it. Hotel costs, travel, gas and food would be an even bigger dent than that 700$. Not to mention the young teens who I grew up with who accessed these services to avoid abuse, or abandonment by their families. What are they supposed to do now?

All of the young, vivacious forward thinkers of NB are elsewhere. We're trying to make a living, trying to save up a bit so we can actually afford a comfortable life when we come back. But not many people are going to come back from Montreal, or Vancouver or Toronto or Calgary when the East Coast is choosing to nestle itself back into the dark ages.

So to the current government of NB I say this: Fuck you and stop ruining my home province.

ETA: For those interested there is a change.org petition to encourage the NB government to revisit the topic of funding the clinic.
