When I heard about the new Sleeping Beauty movie, I assumed it would be a straight up live action remake. Then I heard they were calling it "Maleficent". I literally rolled my eyes and said to myself, "Let me guess, she's 'misunderstood'".

Lo and behold, from Disney:

The untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the 1959 classic "Sleeping Beauty." A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when and invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal-an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces and epic battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps Maleficent's true happiness as well.

WHAT? I mean, really, what? A beautiful pure hearted young woman? Isn't Maleficent a fairy?

Look, I don't begrudge Disney for doing what they want with their own properties.

Angelina Jolie seems perfected suited to the part and they'll probably reel in a new audience of young people who are interested in this new version of Sleeping Beauty. But why not just do a straight remake? Why do this "misunderstood" nonsense? Why have Entertainment Weekly pretend like none of us have seen the animated film?

The nefarious sorceress from Sleeping Beauty with the memorable horns never got to tell her side of the story in Disney’s 1959 animated classic, but in Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, audiences will learn what caused her to curse the king’s daughter.

We know why she cursed Princess Aurora. King Stefan didn't invite her to Aurora's fancy baby party that EVERYONE ELSE IN THE KINGDOM WAS INVITED TO. I mean, dude...

She's a pissed off fairy who felt slighted, so she threw a fit and cursed the kid. That's pretty much it. Here, watch it on Youtube since I can't embed it:

Maleficent is not "misunderstood'. She's the Mistress of All Evil. That pretty much sums it up for me. Misunderstood, my ass.
