Check out this "Ultimate Backseat Bookshelf: 100 Must-Reads for Kids 9-14" list from NPR. (Psst, ZAP ROWSDOWER, are your favorite books on this list?) I think some of the books on the list would be more age-appropriate for older kids, but overall I think they did a good job of having a diverse range of authors, subject matter, and characters.
Anything you would want to add to this list? Any books you don't think should be on the list at all? How about ones you would want to check out for yourself or the kids in your lives?
Off the top of my head, I would add The Wheel on the School written by Meindert DeJong and illustrated by Maurice Sendak (imagine I said that in my best Reading Rainbow voice). I'm going to check out Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai. If I can find a copy at the bookstore, I'll read it with my nieces and nephews who are visiting this week.
*If you click on the title of the book in the list, there's a link to purchase from Amazon, etc.
