In the wake of the death of Eric Garner at the hands of a New York City Police Officer, the United Federation of Teachers in New York has been vocal in their support of protests against police brutality.

Some teachers have publicly broken with their Union's stance by posting pictures of themselves wearing t-shirts supporting the NYPD inside their classrooms, and in some cases wearing the t-shirts on the first day of school.

The union had previously asked teachers not wear the NYPD supporting t-shirts, saying "messages may appear to be supportive, but individuals (parents, students) may see a different meaning in that message".

All I can say is that these teachers seem stunningly oblivious.

(And on an unrelated note, I am really impressed by the The Stream from Al Jazeera. They post lots of thought provoking articles from around the world.)
