So, I came across both of these articles recently, and I thought I would share them and encourage some discussion. The first one describes “What About the Men?” — the conference. Did you know that abortion is the root cause for everything that is wrong with men today? Is your husband gay? It’s probably because you had an abortion. Is he abusive? You’ve probably considered having an abortion once. Does he mishandle the family finances? Definitely abortion. I have to admit, I am a sucker for this type of article. I am fascinated by the logic behind people’s extreme beliefs (I mean, I watch Right Wing Watch constantly), so this is exactly what I seek out in an article.
The next one is not quite so chipper, and I actually disagree with the author’s conclusion. It’s about someone who grew up in a Quiverfull family that followed the ATI system (famous for being the homeschooling system and patriarchal cult followed by the Duggar family). She has great (and horrifying) insight into ATI culture, and what differences and similarities exist with the Duggars. She confirms what I have long suspected about families that follow ATI, which is that for the most part, they live in near-poverty. When your prime directives are to avoid contraception while also discouraging your children from pursuing formal educations and real careers (they are supposed to work for themselves/their families), there is very little opportunity to gain financially, unless you have a TV show or an inheritance. They are also anti-debt, so you can’t even take on loans to keep the family business/finances afloat. Anyway, her story is fascinating, though horrific, so I thought I’d share with you.
