So, aside from the debate about The Shining…, what do y'all think of Stephen King?

I like him. I used to be too scared to read his books, and later I thought he was too crass to be "real literature." But then I read On Writing and Danse Macabre and I changed my mind. He may think of horrible things, but he's a small-h humanist at heart: he's on the side of his main characters.

Plus, in the latest Vanity Fair, he does the Proust Questionnaire and when asked what he would change about his appearance, he says he's "at peace with it" and that his mother told him "Stevie, you'll never be hung for your looks." Gotta love that.

What do you think?
