Welcome To The Bitchery

Our rights as human beings are threatened, ignored, and forgotten in misleading rhetoric. When the 60's and 70's brought about social changes against oppressions, they also had a soundtrack - music as rallying cry. After the horrible SCOTUS decision and my subsequent forever boycott of Hobby Lobby, I got to thinkin', as one does. It is my impression that a lot of us want to be agents of change - but we need inspiration and a support system. Music has always been both inspiring and supportive to me, and I think I might not be alone in this one...

I have been increasingly attracted to political and emotionally raw music lately. I thought it might be interesting to collaborate with y'all, and have a place to share music that is revolutionary, right now. Who are the Bob Dylans, Buffy Sainte-Maries, Neil Youngs, and Sam Cookes of today? Who is bucking the restraints put on artists by most commercial music?

My first response is an amazing Irishman by the name of Andrew Hozier-Byrne, known simply as Hozier.

Hozier is an outstanding vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist. His first single, 'Take Me to Church,' is a scathing critical commentary on the Catholic Church and Irish society. The video is a powerful commentary on vigilante homophobia and Putin-controlled Russia. The song also manages to equate sex with going to church. This shit is layered. Not to mention, amazingly catchy. The first time I watched the official video I got shivers.

Hozier's newest single is called 'Sedated.' As far as I can tell, it is an excellent commentary on society and the media's effect on us. The chorus is especially poignant:

Sedated we're nursing on a poison that never stung

Our teeth and lungs are lined with the scum of it

Somewhere for this, death and guns

We are deaf, we are numb

Free and young and we can feel none of it

Bleak, perhaps but effective. I feel like fighting back and using my youth and privileges for good.

If you are interested in hearing more from Hozier, I would also recommend 'Like Real People Do' and 'Work Song.' You can easily find him on Youtube and Spotify. I would be remiss not to also mention that Hozier has nice hair. No, like, very nice hair. I am really into his hair.

I have many more artists to share, who are yours? Do you have a name idea for these posts? Its seems heavy-handed (like so much I try to write) but I haven't come up with anything better yet. I had fun writing this even if it ends up just being me yelling about music at the internet. ;)
