So I am in summer #2 in the house. Since I bought the house in January 2019 and the front yard was mostly dead grass/sod and 2 garden boxes next to the house with sad little pine shrubs, I assumed I had no plants and would have to deal with that later. (and yes I made lots of Monty Python shrubbery jokes)
Well was I ever fucking wrong! The previous owner had quite the garden before the guy who flipped the house tore shit up. But luckily plants are pretty awesome and stuff is just coming back up.
I’m slowly learning more about gardening, too.
Last year, I had spring bulbs come up, and then some blooming things which I still don’t know what they are in in the garden boxes. I have some giant allium blooming there too, but at least I knew what those were. :) There was a nice clump of something that bloomed super early, too. Turns out that it’s lungwort - such a lovely name! If you want something super early blooming, highly recommend.
Last year some stuff just came up in the grass near the porch, too! I recognized frogbellies and I also tore up a fuckton of what I thought were weeds. I planted some other stuff, and then this giant clump of stuff came in which looked a lot like marijuana until the plant got pretty developed. It is a red swamp mallow (and yes it took a long part of the summer to figure out what the fuck it is, googling “looks like hibiscus” is what eventually got me results).
So this year I have been less handsy with tearing up what I thought was just weed growth. WHOOPSIE turns out last year I mistakenly tore up a ton of creeping phlox (currently blooming!). Also I don’t know where they fuck they were last year, but I have some Asiatic lilies coming up, too. And more of my swamp mallow is coming up which is good because it’s like 5 feet tall and pretty bright red flowers!
Anyhoo, I’m super excited about my plants. How about y’all, how are the gardens growing?
