Plotting my exit strategy (open workplace venting post)

I’m not ready to quit my job right now, but it’s like I got struck by lightening after the election and was just like, I’m wasting my life. That feeling has only been intensifying.

The thing is that it’s a pretty good job (except for a monster commute, but not like that’s anyone’s fault). I have to be kind of vague since many of you know I’m from New Orleans and saying too much will dox me.


My happiness here has been fading, and then combined with the election-related lightening strike, I feel like I’m going to lose my mind. But I don’t have a backup plan. My job is a strange combination of things and doesn’t really exist elsewhere - hunting for a new job means defining a direction for my life. Yikes.

I have an annual review in April and I think that’s enough time for me to come up with a list of reasonable demands that would encourage me to stay. Based on how those demands are received, I think I’ll know whether this is going to continue to be the right place for me. I’ve been here for years; I’m not afraid to ask for what I want.


Now, some complaining:

  1. The two company owners are absolute control freaks, yet NEVER FUCKING COME TO WORK ANYMORE. They blow off meetings, don’t respond to emails, etc. This is a huge reason I’m feeling disillusioned; we are still kind of a startup, essentially, except the figureheads and motivational leaders are TOTALLY checked out.
  2. Based on item #1, I have to make a bunch of executive decisions all the time. I don’t think I’d get in trouble for it, but at the same time, PAY ME FOR IT (that is one of my demands for April).
  3. The owners keep hiring outside consultants to advise them on building up infrastructure for growth. Each time, they are told the company is severely understaffed for the size we are RIGHT NOW. Each time, they reject that analysis, and continue not to take the advice of experts until something very extreme happens.
  4. They put all their eggs in a basket before testing any of them. For example, they tried to introduce a service to our customer base that costs 3x as much and doesn’t fit in with our business model; they invested so much in it and it hasn’t worked, and now they are spreading that panic/blame around to all of us who were not involved in that AT ALL. As if it is OUR responsibility to move product that we had no input in.

Anyone out there who is some sort of head honcho: always remember that the lower level employees KNOW THE MOST THINGS about your business.
