So I'm rewatching an old episode of Scandal and it's about a supreme court nominee who had and affair 15 YEARS before his nomination, and now that the affair is out, everything is going to shit.

After Carlos Danger the other day, I know that affairs are a big deal in political life in the US. My question is WHY?

As long as you are doing the work that you were elected to do, I don't really care who you're banging, even if it's not the person you're supposed to be banging.

As long as what you're doing with your genitals isn't illegal (prostitution, rape, flashing, sexual assault of any kind, molesting kids etc. And I do think abuses of power count, like the President and an intern) I don't really care what you do with them or where you put them.

Why is it such a career ender in American politics? Serious question. I just feel like it distracts from the conversation. If you make a bad call politically because you were wrapped up in your lover's legs, then yes, maybe. But I do think that people in public life should be afforded some level of privacy in their private lives.

What do you guys think?

ETA: Forgot to mention this, but I was wondering about this when the Huma Abedin "Why does she STAY with him?!?" speculation started. What if an open relationship is just part of their marriage agreement? I'm not saying this is true, and it doesn't really apply specifically or only to her, but what if she stayed because she knew and she totally doesn't even care? Do we punish a politician just because their morals don't match up with ours, despite a good track record?
