Everybody loves things even when they know that the creators are...problematic. I personally am a pretty big Lovecraft fan. (like I am legit excited for Del Toro’s “At the Mountains of Madness”) I am aware of his crazy racism. I still enjoy the Cthulu Mythos. Granted, I vastly prefer works other authors have created from it, but I have more than one collection of Lovecraft short stories. I am also a crafter, and have been thinking of making a Letterman sweater with a wink and a nod to a fictional school or university and of course my first thought was Miskatonic U sweater. But I do worry that were I to were it at a con or other gathering of literary/pop culture lovers I may be subtly telegraphing that I am racist (even though I try really hard not to be). BoyHeathen suggested instead of a purple and black sweater with the MU “logo”(or at least one of the ones available online) I instead do a burgundy and dark blue sweater with Eta Beta Pi stitched into the breast as a nod to Unseen University. Do you guys like/love things with problematic creators/content? Would a Lovecraftian hand knit come off as condoning racism, or just harmless nerd love?
